A quilt’s back records work the displayed side has been arranged to conceal.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Turn a finished thing over and you find the honest version. Knots, joins, changes of thread, the place where a plan was abandoned and something else worked instead: all of it sits on the side nobody is meant to look at. The front is a decision about presentation, and the back is a record of how the work actually went.

Look at the reverse of something made by hand near you. If you make things, resist tidying the back into a lie, and consider showing it to whoever is learning from you. Beginners are helped enormously by seeing that finished work has a messy underside.
