The version of yourself others find convenient may deserve less authority over your choices.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
There is usually a version of you that other people prefer: available, agreeable, unlikely to complicate anything. That version gets praised, so it grows, and after a while its habits start making decisions that a fuller version of you would not have made. Being easy to deal with is a real virtue, but it should not be the thing holding the pen.
Look at a commitment you took on recently and ask who it was convenient for. If the answer is not you at all, that is worth sitting with rather than acting on immediately. Saying no once, plainly and without a long reason, is a good place to start.
Which version of you exists mainly for other people’s convenience?
