The person waiting for the next lift may be making room rather than lacking urgency.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Standing back is often read as hesitation when it is a decision. Someone who lets a full lift go has usually done a quick calculation about the wheelchair, the pram, the person with crutches, the eight people already pressed against the back wall. From outside it looks like they are slow; from inside it is a small piece of arithmetic done on somebody else’s behalf.
Be careful about reading pace as character in general. And when it is your turn to be crowded, consider waiting the ninety seconds. Nobody will thank you, which is roughly the point.
Whose hesitation might be courtesy you have been reading as weakness?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
