The paragraph you resist may deserve a slower reading than the one you underline.

Underlining is mostly a record of agreement, which means a marked up book can be a map of what you already thought. Resistance is a more interesting signal: the paragraph that irritates you, that you skim, that you want to argue with, has touched something the agreeable passages left alone. That reaction is information, though it rarely feels like it at the time.

Go back to the part you skipped and read it twice, slowly, without preparing a rebuttal. Ask what would have to be true for the writer to be right. You may still disagree, but the disagreement will be worth more.
