Words should clarify reality, not merely decorate emotion.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Language can describe what is actually happening or it can dress up a feeling until it seems like an account of the world. The second is common and comfortable: strong words, dramatic framing, and no additional accuracy. It relieves the feeling and leaves the situation exactly as unclear as before.

When you catch yourself using heightened language, try restating the situation in plain terms with only the facts. Notice how different it sounds and how much more workable it becomes. The feeling is still valid. It just does not have to be the description you act from.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you dress up a feeling instead of naming it plainly?
