A person who communicates indirectly eventually becomes disappointed by interpretations they helped create.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Indirect communication hands the other person the job of interpretation, and then their interpretation becomes the thing you are disappointed by. The hint that was missed, the expectation never stated, the preference implied rather than said: each sets up a misunderstanding you participated in creating.

If you are frequently let down by how people respond, check how clearly you asked. Say the direct version once and see what happens. It removes the deniability that indirectness protects, which is uncomfortable, and it also removes the disappointment that comes with it.
