Young men are fitter to invent than to judge, fitter for execution than for counsel, and fitter for new projects than for settled business.

— Francis Bacon

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Energy and judgement do not usually arrive at the same time. Early on you have force, appetite and no sense of what cannot be done, which is exactly what a new thing needs and exactly the wrong equipment for advising on an old one. Later the proportions reverse. Neither state is superior; the mistake is asking one of them to do the other’s work.

Be honest about which you currently have more of. If it is drive, put it into something new and borrow judgement from someone who has it, and if it is judgement, find someone with the energy rather than doing the running yourself.
