The strongest leader in the room may be the person asking the best questions.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Questions do more work than statements in a room full of capable people, because they surface what everyone already knows but has not connected. The person asking well is directing the group’s attention, which is what leading a discussion actually consists of. Volume of contribution is a poor proxy for influence.

In your next meeting, aim to ask three good questions rather than to make three good points. Watch how much the direction of the conversation follows from the questions rather than the assertions.
