Resilience is remembering that the chapter can hurt without becoming the ending.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

In the middle of something painful, it is almost impossible to tell the difference between a bad period and a permanent condition, because pain has no sense of time. Everything present feels final. Resilience is not pretending it does not hurt; it is holding on to the possibility that this is a section rather than the conclusion, even when you cannot feel that possibility.

When the present feels permanent, try shortening your horizon to the next day rather than the next year. You do not have to believe things will improve. You only have to leave the question open long enough for the situation to change.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What hard stretch are you treating as though it were permanent?
