Sometimes the question is not whether something matters, but why you need it to matter.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a difference between something mattering and needing it to matter. The second is usually about what its importance would say about you, and it distorts your judgment about the thing itself. Once you see the need underneath, the original question becomes much easier to answer honestly.

When you are arguing hard for something’s significance, pause and ask what its being significant would prove. Sometimes the answer is nothing and the thing simply matters. Often it reveals what you were actually defending.
