All that happens is as usual and familiar as the rose in spring and the crop in summer.

— Marcus Aurelius

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whatever is happening to you has happened before, to people much like you, and the pattern is as regular as the seasons. Illness, disappointment, an unreasonable colleague, a sudden change of fortune, are ordinary features of a life rather than special afflictions. The shock often comes from an unspoken assumption that it should be otherwise.

When the next thing arrives, drop the question of why this is happening to you and take up the question of what is to be done. The first has no answer. The second usually has three or four, and one of them can be started today.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which crisis of yours is more ordinary than it feels?
