Many a time a man cannot be such as he would be, if circumstances do not admit of it.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Conditions set the limits on what a person can be. Someone short of money, sleep or time is not the same as someone who is not, and the patience, generosity and clear thinking available to them is genuinely smaller. That is a fact about the circumstances and not a verdict on the character inside them.

Apply this in both directions this week. When you fall short of how you meant to behave, ask what you were working with before concluding anything about yourself. And when someone else is curt or unreliable, assume the constraints before the flaw, since you can usually see their behaviour and almost never see their conditions.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who would you be right now if conditions allowed it?
