You must have a genius for charity as well as for anything else.

— Henry David Thoreau

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Generosity is a skill, not merely a good intention. Handing over money, time or advice badly can leave the other person smaller than they were, and the giver rarely notices because the feeling on the giving end is pleasant either way. Doing it well means knowing what is needed, giving in a form the person can accept, and staying out of the way afterwards. That takes attention, which is what usually goes missing.

Before your next act of help, ask the person what would be useful instead of deciding for them. If you cannot ask, give the thing that leaves them the most choice about how to use it.
