I had rather have a fool to make me merry than experience to make me sad.

— William Shakespeare

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a case for lightness over knowledge. Experience accumulates and much of what it teaches is discouraging, so the better-informed you become the more reasons you have to expect the worst, and being right about that is poor compensation for the mood it produces. Someone who can make you laugh is doing something practically useful, not something trivial.

If your week has been heavy with knowing things, spend an evening with the person who makes you laugh rather than the one who makes you think. Choose the comedy over the documentary once. You will not become less wise for it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you rather be cheerful or right about how things are?
