To enjoy life, we must touch much of it lightly.

— Voltaire

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Grip can spoil a week as thoroughly as circumstance can. Holding every situation tightly, needing each one to go a particular way, turns an ordinary week into a series of tests you might fail. A lighter touch is not indifference; it is declining to make your wellbeing depend on things that were never going to comply. Much of what happens in an ordinary week does not deserve the weight we assign it.

Pick something you have been gripping: an outcome at work, a plan for the weekend, someone else’s opinion. Loosen it deliberately and see whether anything actually falls. Reserve the tight grip for the two or three things that genuinely warrant it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you gripping that would be better held loosely?
