Thousands of candles can be lit from a single, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most things shrink when divided: money, time, the last slice of cake. Some good things work the other way. Joy passed on leaves you with as much as you had, and often more, because shared delight gets reflected back and becomes something two people hold. Guarding happiness as though it were scarce misunderstands what kind of thing it is.

When something good happens to you, tell someone who will be glad about it. And when you see someone else’s small flame, add to it rather than measuring it against your own.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you give away without having any less yourself?
