To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life.

— Robert Louis Stevenson

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Accepting yourself and becoming more than you are look like opposing tasks. The first is accepting what you actually are, including the parts you would not have chosen. The second is developing what is latent, which requires dissatisfaction with the current version. Living well seems to involve holding both at once: full acceptance of who you are today alongside a refusal to treat that as the finished article.

If you lean toward self-criticism, spend a week practising the first task. If you lean toward comfort, spend it on the second. Most people know immediately which one they have been avoiding.
