To persevere, trusting in what hopes he has, is courage in a man.

— Euripides

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Continuing without a guarantee is the ordinary form bravery takes, and it rarely looks like anything from outside. You do not know that it will work; you carry on because the hope you have, however modest, is still worth acting on. That is a decision repeated daily rather than one dramatic act.

If you are in a long stretch with no confirmation, count the continuing itself as evidence of something. Keep the horizon short enough to be bearable: this week, the next step, the next conversation. And if it is a particular plan you are pursuing, decide what would tell you to adjust it, since changing a plan is not the same as letting go of the hope behind it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you continuing on nothing more than hope?
