The hours of folly are measured by the clock but of wisdom, no clock can measure.

— William Blake

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Time spent badly is easy to account for, because you can see exactly how much of it went. Time that changed you resists that arithmetic: a conversation, a walk, an hour of reading can turn out to be the load-bearing part of a decade. Judging your days by how efficiently they were filled will keep undervaluing the ones that mattered most.

Before cutting something slow out of your week, ask what it has quietly been doing. Some of it is waste and should go. Some of it is where your thinking happens, and it will not defend itself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What time of yours was well spent though nothing was produced?
