How few there are who have courage enough to own their faults, or resolution enough to mend them.

— Benjamin Franklin

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Admitting a fault and repairing it are two separate acts of nerve, and most people manage neither cleanly. The first requires you to hold still while an unflattering thing about you is true. The second is harder, because it means the admission was not the end of the matter and you now have to change something you are used to.

Pick one fault you have already confessed more than once. Confession has quietly become a substitute for repair if you keep naming it and nothing moves. Choose the smallest concrete change that would make the complaint about you slightly less accurate, and make it this week.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which fault have you admitted freely and still never repaired?
