There is but one cause of human failure. And that is man’s lack of faith in his true Self.

— William James

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

As a single cause of everything it is far too neat, and plenty of failures come from circumstances nobody chose. Narrowed down, it still points at something real: a great many attempts end early because the person stopped believing they were someone who could finish, not because the task defeated them. That withdrawal usually looks like a sensible decision at the time.

Watch for the sentence that begins with I am not someone who. Whatever follows is a description of your history, not a fixed fact about you. Test one of those this month by doing the thing badly and seeing whether the description survives.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which attempt did you abandon because you doubted you were enough?
