He who begins by loving Christianity more than Truth, will proceed by loving his sect or church better than Christianity, and end in loving himself better than all.

— Samuel Taylor Coleridge

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Put loyalty to a belief above loyalty to what is true, and the belief starts to shrink. First it narrows to your version of it, then to the group that holds that version, then to your own standing inside that group. Each step feels like faithfulness while it happens. One test: if being shown wrong would feel like a defeat rather than a gain, something other than truth has become the point.

Take one conviction you hold strongly and ask what evidence would change it. If nothing could, you are defending a position rather than looking for an answer. Let someone outside your usual circle correct you this week.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where does loyalty to your side outrank getting it right?
