Nobody can bring you peace but yourself.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Waiting for calm to arrive from outside puts your steadiness in someone else’s hands, and they never agreed to hold it. The apology, the promotion, the person finally understanding: each can be genuinely good and still leave you exactly as restless as before. What settles is usually something done inwardly, and it can often be done whether or not the outside thing ever arrives. That is no reason to stop wanting it, only a reason to stop waiting on it.

Name the one condition you treat as standing between you and peace. Ask what you could set down today without it.
