Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; adversity not without many comforts and hopes.

— Francis Bacon

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Neither condition is pure. When things are going well you spend part of the time guarding what you have, waiting for it to slip, and quietly tiring of what you worked so hard to get. When things are going badly there are still small mercies, and there is the plain fact that the situation can change.

Whichever side you are on now, look for the part that does not match the label. If life is comfortable, name the fear underneath it and deal with the fear rather than the comfort. If life is hard, write down one thing that is still holding.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What comfort did you find in a season you dreaded?
