You’re not too dirty for church. That’s literally who the building is for.

Nobody shows up at a hospital because they are healthy. A church exists for people who are not sorted out, so the feeling that you have to fix yourself before walking in has the logic exactly backwards. Shame is very good at sounding like respect. It tells you to stay away out of politeness, and you end up alone with the thing.

If there is a place you have been avoiding until you are better, go once as you are. Sit near the back and leave early if you need to. Nobody at the door is owed an explanation of your last six months.
