Winning an argument and solving a problem are different goals that often point opposite directions. Defending your position protects your standing and usually costs you the better answer, which someone else in the room may already have. Letting go of authorship of the solution is what makes the solution possible. It stings for about a minute and saves you weeks.
In your next disagreement, say what outcome you want before you defend your reasoning. Ask the other person what they would do and actually consider it. If their version is better, use it and say where it came from.
In your last argument, did you want to win or solve it?
