Keeping a goal private protects it from judgment and also from accountability. When nobody knows, quitting costs nothing and leaves no trace, which is exactly why private plans dissolve so easily. One person who asks how it is going changes the arithmetic without adding pressure from a crowd. A witness is not an audience.

Choose someone who will ask rather than someone who will praise. Tell them the specific thing and when they should check in. Give them permission to ask again in three weeks, when the interesting part starts.
