A title changes your name tag. It shouldn’t change how you talk to the person refilling the napkins.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Titles are administrative, and it is remarkably easy to let one quietly reclassify people around you. The shift is small at first: slightly less patience with whoever is doing the least glamorous job, a bit more attention paid upward than downward. Everybody notices this, especially the people being reclassified. It is also the single fastest way to lose a team’s goodwill.

Keep talking to the same people the same way you did last month. Learn the names of whoever is doing the unseen jobs where you are, and use them in front of others.
