If you want a team to take risks, clap loudest for the attempt that didn’t work.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Teams take risks only when failing is visibly survivable. If the attempts that do not work are met with silence and the successes get all the noise, everyone quietly concludes the safe option is the smart option, and the group gets cautious without anyone deciding to. Applauding the brave miss is how you pay for the next brave attempt. It is cheap and almost nobody does it.

When someone tries something and it fails this week, say out loud that trying it was right. Then help them fix it. Both halves are necessary.
