A nudge at the right moment beats a shove at the wrong one.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Timing carries most of the weight in changing what somebody does. The same words land as encouragement when a person is nearly ready and as pressure when they are not, and pressure usually produces resistance rather than movement. Reading the moment is the skill. Force is what people use when they have not bothered to read it.

Instead of pushing someone this week, ask where they are with it and then wait. When you see them leaning toward it, that is when one sentence helps. Small and well-timed beats big and early almost every time.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who needed gentleness from you and got force instead?
