Make your contribution a platform instead of a monument.

A monument commemorates something finished and asks only to be admired. A platform is unfinished by design and asks to be used. The first protects your contribution; the second lets it multiply. The choice usually shows up in small decisions about whether to make something extensible or perfect.
When you are tempted to polish something to completion, consider leaving it usable and open instead. Ask what someone would need in order to build on this. Then provide that rather than the final coat.
