Your parents are doing this for the first time too. They didn’t get a tutorial either.

Parents are improvising far more than they let on. They are meeting each new version of you for the first time as well, with no manual and usually tired, and a lot of what reads as strictness is somebody guessing under pressure. Knowing that does not make every rule right or every mistake fine. It just stops the whole thing being a contest between someone who should know better and someone who does not.

Ask one of them what they were like at your age and listen longer than feels natural. You will find out where a rule came from. Some rules move once the worry underneath gets talked about.
