The GPS never insults you for the missed exit. It just finds the next road. Be that kind to yourself.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A missed turn produces recalculation, not commentary. The machine simply finds the next available road, which is what a useful response to error looks like: no lecture, no review of how you got here, just the next step from where you actually are. Your internal version tends to deliver a long speech first. The speech never improves the route.

Next time you get something wrong, go straight to the question of what happens now. Save the review for later, when it can be practical instead of punishing. Talking to yourself the way a stranger would is usually an upgrade.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How harshly do you talk to yourself after a wrong turn?
