Mispronouncing words in a new language isn’t embarrassing. It’s the sound of someone actually trying.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Mistakes are the audible part of learning. Nobody acquires a language silently and correctly; the wrong stress and the mangled vowel are the sound of someone doing the actual work, while the careful silence of a person who will not risk it produces nothing. Native speakers hear effort and usually meet it warmly. The embarrassment is nearly always larger inside you than outside.

Say the word anyway and let someone correct you. Repeat their version twice before moving on. Aim at being understood rather than at sounding right, and the sounding right shows up later on its own.
