You can inherit someone’s lesson without inheriting their limitations.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whoever taught you was working with their own fears, their own era, and their own unexamined ceilings, and those came bundled with the useful parts. Taking the lesson does not oblige you to take the limits that came with it. Separating the two is part of learning properly rather than a betrayal of the person who taught you.

List what you absorbed from someone who mattered to you, then mark which items are wisdom and which are their caution. Keep the first. You are allowed to put down the second.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your parents’ fears did you inherit along with their wisdom?
