Fifty kind comments and one cruel one, and you’ll reread the cruel one nine times. Notice that and stop.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Attention is pulled much harder toward threat than toward praise, so a single hostile line will occupy more of your mind than a whole page of warm ones. That is not a flaw in you, and it is not a sign the cruel one was more accurate. It simply weighs more, and the weight has nothing to do with truth.
When you catch yourself returning to it, count how many times you have read it. Then go back and read the others slowly, since they need the deliberate effort the harsh one never does.
Whose single harsh comment still replays in your head?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
