Places become chapters because certain versions of us existed nowhere else.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Life divides into chapters partly because certain versions of you only existed in certain settings. The way you were in that flat, in that job, in that city, does not survive the move intact, since it was partly produced by the surroundings. That is why leaving somewhere can feel like the ending of a self rather than a change of address.

When a chapter closes, allow that something is genuinely ending. Say what that version of you was good at. Naming it makes the loss easier to carry and keeps what was worth keeping.
