Roots do a specific job. They hold you steady when things get difficult, give you somewhere to return to, and provide a sense of who you are when other things fall away. What they are not is a boundary. Confusing stability with confinement makes people treat any ambition to go further as a kind of disloyalty.

Ask whether your background is currently holding you up or holding you in. If it is the second, remember that most people who loved you wanted the first. Reaching is not a betrayal.
