A breakup takes away a person, not your future. Grieve the first one and protect the second.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Losing a relationship removes a person from your days, which is enough to grieve without also handing over everything that was going to happen afterwards. The two get fused in the early weeks, so that the ending feels like it took the future with it. It took one part of one version of it.

Let the sadness about the person be as large as it is. Keep it separate from decisions about the next year. Make no permanent choices for a while, and protect the plans that were yours before any of this.
