In a relay, reaching back too early drops the baton. Timing is a team skill.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Eagerness to help can arrive before the moment for it, and premature help is not help, it is interference. The handover only works when both people are moving at the same speed in the same direction, which requires attention to what the other person is doing rather than to how ready you feel.

Where you tend to jump in early, with a sibling, a colleague, someone struggling, wait for the actual signal. Ask what they need and when. Being available is different from being early, and the difference is whether the other person is ready to let go.
