Maturity is realizing that independence includes knowing when to ask for help.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Refusing help is often mistaken for self-sufficiency when it is really a kind of brittleness. Real independence includes knowing your own limits well enough to recognize when something exceeds them, and having relationships strong enough that asking is possible. Someone who cannot ask is not more capable; they simply have a lower ceiling and a longer recovery.

Ask yourself where you are currently struggling alone with something someone else could help with in an hour. Ask them. Most people find it easier to be asked than to be endlessly impressed, and the request usually strengthens the relationship rather than costing you anything in it.
