Risk feels different after the unlikely finally happens to you.

Odds are abstract until they arrive. Before the unlikely thing happens to you, risk is a number you can shrug at, and afterward it becomes a texture you carry everywhere, sometimes for years. The world did not become more dangerous, but your sense of it has been permanently rewritten by one experience.

Be patient with yourself if you have started avoiding things you used to do easily. And be patient with people whose caution seems out of proportion. They may be living downstream of something you never had to survive.
