The treatment of people with no advocates is where principles are actually tested. Anyone can be decent toward someone whose mistreatment would be noticed. What happens where nothing is at stake socially, no one is watching, and no cost attaches to cruelty, is the honest measure, for institutions and for individuals.
Ask who in your world has the least ability to complain about how they are treated. Then look at how they are treated, including by you. That answer is worth more than any stated value.
Whom do you treat well when there is nothing to gain?
