New beginnings rarely look impressive while everything is still unfamiliar.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The early stage of anything new is clumsy, slow, and unconvincing, and it looks nothing like the thing it will become. That is when most people conclude they have made a mistake, because the evidence available is genuinely unimpressive. Nothing is wrong. You are simply seeing the beginning, which never resembles the result.

Give a new start a period during which you are not allowed to judge it, long enough for the unfamiliarity to wear off. Three months is usually a reasonable minimum. Judge it after that, on evidence rather than on how awkward it currently feels.
