Influence is dangerous when its owner believes they have none.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People who do not think of themselves as influential do not moderate. A passing comment, a look, a mood carried into a room, all land far harder than intended because the person delivering them believes they are just talking. Parents, senior colleagues, and anyone widely liked run this risk constantly.

Assume your reactions weigh more than they feel like they do, at least with those who have less standing than you. Small deliberate care there prevents damage you would never hear about.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who takes your offhand remarks more seriously than you intend?
