Well-handled power reduces the need for defences against it. People stop hedging, stop protecting themselves, stop routing around you, because nothing about your behaviour requires it. That absence is invisible and it is the actual measure of how you are doing.

Ask whether people prepare before talking to you, and what they are preparing for. If they are getting ready to manage a reaction, that is worth changing, and the change is entirely on your side of the exchange.
