People obey positions temporarily and remember treatment permanently.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Deference to a role ends when the role does. What lasts is how you treated people, and that memory shapes what happens to you long after you no longer have anything to offer or withhold. Everyone eventually finds out which of the two they were accumulating.

Assume every current interaction will be recalled by the other person in ten years, when you have no position at all. Decide how you want it remembered, and act now rather than at the point of departure.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How do you still talk about someone who once managed you?
