Hand-cut dovetails come out a little uneven. That unevenness is how people can tell a human made them.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Perfect spacing is a machine’s signature. When a joint is cut by hand, the slight variation is evidence of a person deciding, over and over, where the line should go. People respond to that without knowing why, the same way they can tell handwriting from type.

Next time you build something, resist the urge to sand away every trace of the process. Leave one honest mark: a pencil line, a visible stitch, a brush edge. Then notice which pieces people pick up and ask about, because it is usually the ones that look made rather than produced.
