If you only work when the teacher walks by, you’re training yourself to need a teacher.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Working for a watcher trains the wrong reflex. Every time effort switches on because someone is nearby, you deepen the link between attention and output, until your own intentions are not enough to move you. The habit outlasts the class. Later there is no teacher walking past, and the person who has to notice is you.

Give yourself one block this week where nobody could possibly check: a quiet half hour on something assigned, with your phone face down. Work it as though it were being graded. Do that often enough and the need for an audience thins out.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you work the same way when nobody is watching?
