Character is mostly built out of refusals nobody records. The thing you did not say in the group chat, the answer you did not copy, the party you left early from because you knew yourself. None of that makes a story worth telling, which is exactly why it works. Each small no is a vote for the kind of person you are becoming, and the voting happens when no one is counting.

Pick one small no for this week and decide it in advance, while it is still cheap. Deciding in the moment is harder, because in the moment you will want to be liked.
